In olden times (you know, the 90’s), in order to be in business, you had to have business cards. Still, do. Then in the early 2000’s, you had to have a web site to be competitive. Still do. Now you HAVE to be involved in Social Media. But be warned: building a large following in Social Media is a slow process. Definitely a marathon, not a sprint. (This year, it also evolved to: you have to have a mobile website!)
You Are NOT Kim Kardashian!
Unless you are a celebrity, famous, or there is some unusually high-trending event to draw followers (Paris bombings, Oscar awards, etc.), it is very likely it will take a long time to attract followers to your business’s Social Media venues.
Why Do I Want Strangers Following My Posts?
Good question. I know many people that won’t accept friend requests unless they know that person… well, personally. If you are an individual, there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. In fact, I recommend it. However, if you are a business, or marketing something, you need to build a “platform” (in today’s jargon, that is a strategic base of venues in Social Media to market your products or services).
Influence = $
The more Social Media followers you have, the more influence you can very subtly exert over their buying decisions. Imagine how much influence Oprah Winfrey’s Facebook posts have on people or Katy Perry (with 8 million Twitter followers). Just mentioning a product will send it through the roof. If 1/10th of 1% of Katy Perry‘s Twitter followers bought a product she mentions, it would sell 8000 extra units. Imagine that was a car at $30,000.00. That would be $240,000,000.00 extra in revenue from 1/10 of 1% of her influence! $240 million dollars! Now imagine if a whole ONE PERCENT BOUGHT. Do you think someone at Lexus might be running those same numbers?
The good news is: Social Media is very affordable. Accounts are free. All it takes is time and a particular expertise in building traffic, content writing, customization for consistency in branding, and a marketer’s understanding of Social Media strategy. Well, it’s free to start anyway.
Downside: Slow, Time Consuming
The bad news, you are very likely NOT Katy Perry. So you have to build Social Media followers the old-fashioned way (and by old fashioned, I mean the way they did it back in 2010). You have to be interesting. I know, right? You have to educate, entertain, and be engaging.
